Artists Statement
Shortly after earning my BFA in painting I went looking for
adventure and landed on Maui. After 20 years I still find the
inspiration a working artist continually seeks.
Many different stories are told when a viewer first looks
at my paintings. I hear about walks in the forest,
dancing women, memories of a beautiful shower. It is my goal
to engage the viewer's imagination bringing them to a place
of tranquility where they can rise above the everyday concerns.
In my paintings I want the deep space that captures the calmness
of looking out at the vastness of the ocean. But as soon as
the unavoidable landscape is too apparent I gather the courage
to change the composition and focus. I do this through
the contrast with flatter, more historically abstract shapes
which suggest a bigger shape, as if the canvas is only
a slice of the painting, allowing the viewer to feel expansive.
Always there is color, the most irresistible of sensual beauties.
For me color resonates in my soul and there is an inner harmony
when the right colors speak to each other. I apply the thinest
of layers with the softess of brushes. This brings a depth to
the work and allows the colors to change depending where
the viewer stands.This intriguing phenomenon continues to
attract the viewers attention inciting imagination.
